Martha's Vineyard After Labor Day

Jennifer’s Travel Journal Martha's Vineyard After Labor Day

ALL PHOTOS COPYRIGHT 2010 Jennifer Palermo

Martha’s Vineyard was just what the doctor ordered for a little R & R after a busy schedule! We arrived just after Labor Day weekend so the weather was perfect without all the crowds! We took the ferry from Woods Hole, Mass.

And I am so glad we took our car so we could have more freedom to explore the island without having to wait for a bus or taxi! (Well worth the $67 one way ride on the Steamship Authority. We left NJ at 3:15 am (I prefer driving when not so many cars on rd; going over we got on a ferry ride not scheduled, right after the 9:30 am and on the way back we were on standby and were the last car on at 8:15 am!

We stayed at a wonderful B & B, The Victorian Inn with great hosts Karen & Steve.

We were served great breakfasts every morning with warm muffins & choice of French toast, pancakes, or eggs Benedict. Steve mapped out the whole island for us and gave us special hints of places to go like John Belushi’s grave and a Sheep Farm.

We learned a lot about the history of Martha’s Vineyard from the Historical Tour.

The Vincent House

Dr. Fisher House

The Whaling Church

Great meals at Il Tesoro @ The Charlotte’s Inn in Edgartown

The Beach Plum Inn for dinner.

Alchemy for outdoor dining...

South Beach

This is Patricia's Neal's house. The actress died this summer. My friend Sue saw Ms Neal having breakfast at the Lure Grill in June.

Another gorgeous home...

What a view...

Morning Glory Farm...

Martha’s Vineyard was named for explorer Bartholomew Gosnold’s daughter Martha. The island was covered with grapes when he visited in 1602.

When you get off the ferry you will enter in Vineyard Haven. Stop by the Black Dog Café.

Next town Oak’s Bluff famous for its Summer Camp Meeting and quaint Victorian cottages.

Further south is Edgartown where we stayed.

Don’t miss the Cliffs at Aquinnah.

Alley’s General Store in Chilmark.

Larsen’s for takeout seafood in Menemsha. This is right where Carly Simon shot her DVD in 1987. We got a signed copy. No celeb sightings, but I heard Carly & her daughter were at Larsen’s over Labor Day : )

Lobster at Larsen’s in Menemsha. 1 ½ lb lobster for $15!

There was a terrible fire in Menemsha of the Coast Guard Station this summer. The investigation continues as well as plans to rebuild.

You can also explore the island on bicycles or mopeds and explore lighthouses.

“Jaws” was filmed in Martha’s Vineyard and it was fun to watch the film again and see many of the places we went to!

  5. Oh thank you so much for taking me back there. Oak Bluffs, Menemsha, the general store in Chilmark, I love the Vineyard. My father used to have a house on Oyster-Watcha. One summer we spent 3 weeks there. So amazing. The kids were so free.

  7. Hello! My name's Erin, and I run a blog on all things New England :)
I stumbled upon this post of yours while surfing the web for details on The Victorian Inn in Edgartown... love your photos, particularly! I'm not sure if you'd remember, but in case you do, could you tell me the room # of the room with the maroon throw pillows? Victorian Inn's website displays pictures of only a few rooms, so I'm having trouble deciding on which one to book!
Any help is appreciated :) Thank you!
