Jersey Shore Journal - Life and Times at the Jersey Shore

Can you believe? Snow in October? We got rain at the Jersey Shore but North Jersey, PA, and the North East were hit with an unexpected snowstorm. Many were without power, there were major car accidents and many trees down. Did you get snow yet? The skiers must be loving this. The Poconos got 13 inches!

St Michael's Maryland The Inn at Perry Cabin

St Michael’s Maryland is a great place for a weekend getaway any time of year. It is on the Eastern shore of Maryland on the Miles River that flows into the Chesapeake Bay. It is close to DC, 2 hrs from Philly and 4 hrs from NYC. This nautical town is a great place to unwind, dine, sightsee, shop and sail.

We stayed at the Inn at Perry Cabin, a mansion on the Miles River with 2 excellent restaurants, the Purser’s Pub and Sherwood’s Landing. The hotel was once owned by Laura Ashley and now has 78 rooms. Relax with a massage at the Linden Spa.

We had a lovely room with a water view to enjoy the sunrise each morning. We also had a little sitting area on the terrace.

We took a narrated Historic Cruise on the Patriots Cruises. The boat leaves next to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Check for times during the off season.

Tour interesting maritime history, water fowling, shipbuilding, tour the Hooper Strait Lighthouse and a great gift shop. St. Michael's is where James Michener lived when he wrote his book, 'Chesapeake.'

There is a Walking tour of the life of Frederick Douglass. You can also purchase a Walking tour Book at the Chesapeake Trading Company on Talbot Street. Abolitionist Frederick Douglass was born in Talbott County. As a young slave he was sent from St. Michael’s to live with his mater’s relatives in Baltimore. There he learned to read and write. He returned to St Michael’s and later escaped. Later he became U S Marshall for DC, a recorder of deeds and US Minister to Haiti. He also supported Women’s Suffrage.

Coming Events - Oct. Fall into St. Michael’s – Scarecrow Festival, Pumpkin Festival and Halloween Festival. Nov. 5 – Oyster Fest 2nd Weekend in Dec. Christmas in St. Michael’s – Parade 10:30 am, House Tour Sat & Sun. St. Mary’s Square $30 9 – 4 pm, 10 – noon.

We picked delicious steamed Blue Claw Crabs at the Crab Claw Restaurant.

Our meals at the Inn Sherwood's Landing and Perser's Pub were excellent...

We took a drive to Tilghman’s Island a quaint little town on the Chesapeake. When I was a child we sailed from New Jersey down the Chesapeake as far south as Oxford. It was so fun to see the area where we had been and to see the little coves we sailed into at night to get fuel, shop for needed bread and milk and maybe even find a Laundromat. What a wonderful memory for a family vacation.

notice Pot Pie Rd!

I hope you enjoyed our visit to St. Michael's. If you ever get the chance, I think you would have a nice time in this quaint town.
Happy travels, Jennifer aka Gigi
